The remnants of
Tropical Storm Hanna came through the area on Saturday, and we did not
race that day. On Sunday, the winds were from the NW at 9 MPH in the
morning, but became light and variable in the afternoon. 3 races were
sailed; Frank Gallagher, took first place in a Lightning fleet of 11
boats, and won the Norman C. Schaller trophy for the highest-finishing
boat in the largest class in the regatta.
Commentary by Bill Buck "The Nudge"
A day at the Races
This is not to confuse yesterdays race with a famous Marx Bros
movie of the same name. The day started out by THE NUDGE reading
the AccuWeather forecast calling for breezes out of the NNW
shifting to the W and building to the high teens. This created
concern for this informed old sailor as his comfort level is the
mid teens. Oh well if he had to abandon the last race, he a least
would be among the first in line for the anticipated big BBQ that
was postponed from Saturday.
Now to the races; with DIMINISHING breezes and
six fleets to start in a limited time frame, the RC did a superb
job of getting of three races and managing the all well,
especially shorting the last race and saving a lot of agony. The
Lightning Fleet fielded the most boats with eleven, the Albs with
a disappointing nine (more on that later), plus the two Vanguard
15's, a very very good turnout of Bucs and the beautiful Hamptons
out in full force. A few Cats, Scots and one FJ were there.
Although it would have nice to see more sails on the river it was
pleasing to see that many out enjoying a fine late Summer Day.
The Jordan father daughter challenge was won by
Gregg taking first place closely followed by daughter Alana in
second proving not only that father knows best, but sails best and
must be a darn good teacher. He would make a very good person to
line up as a speaker next Spring. PRAF would do well to take
advantage of his knowledge and abilities. Third place went to the
Duncan team of Peter and son Steven.. Fourth place went to Dan who
sailed the best regatta that THE NUDGE has ever observed him sail.
Those first four places were very close.
Where were the Alb no shows of Tim, Kevin,
George and Team G ( there was some talk that Team G was concerned
about dirty water, if this was the case a free boat wash could
have arranged). If weather was of concern yesterday was a perfect
example of THE NUDGES saying that it is better to come down and
see what is happing weather wise than to sit at hone wishing that
you had. THE NUDGE
