PRSA Rookie Regatta Results

We had a good turnout for the PRSA Rookie Regatta this past Sunday, with 6 I-20s, 6 Lightnings, 3 Albacores, and 2 Buccaneers coming out for the fun.  Several boats had a true rookie on board, and those that didn’t had crews driving and drivers crewing.  Results are posted below, and I’ve included a few of my observations from the course on Lightning #14592 (from the middle position while Piercarlo drove his first races in a long while!).  You should feel free to add your observations in the comments section!

The weather looked much more promising than the forecast as we arrived at the marina on Sunday.   We sailed up to the course in a nice northerly breeze…only to see it become soft and spotty as the first starts got going.  PRO Allen Griffen and his RC crew did a great job in adjusting the course but also getting us as many races as possible in a very shifty and variable N/NE/NW wind.  With short T1 courses the start was important, and we found that getting a good start and staying in the pressure (generally up the left side of the course along the airport, though this was not the case in the first race) was paramount.  Making sure to keep the boat moving forward fast, even when headed, was also important in all of the shifts and swirls.  Over the 3 races we saw conditions ranging from nearly no wind to full on hiking conditions (for a few moments at least).  Overall, though, the racing was fun and clean, and it was great to see new faces on boats and familiar people in new positions.  The sun even came out enough for us to enjoy a nice post-race BBQ and awards ceremony!

PRSA Rookie Regatta This Sunday!

Back by popular demand, this Sunday’s PRSA Rookie Regatta is a chance to introduce new people to sailing, switch up skipper/crew positions, and just have some fun sailing in different combinations than normal for a 1-day regatta (not scored as part of the PRSA Spring Series).  Please make sure to review the Sailing Instructions and the Bonus Categories (below).  We will have Bonus Sheets for each boat to fill out on Sunday.  If you want a hard copy of the SIs, please print them for yourself in advance.

Fantastic Fun at the PRSA Rookie Regatta!

We had a great turnout for the 2016 Rookie Regatta, with 15 boats on the water and new sailors or crew in new positions on almost all of them!  The wind was a bit tricky, but we still managed to run 4 races.  There was plenty of time left afterward to enjoy a beautiful sunny afternoon on shore with some BBQ & beer as we all chatted about the racing and celebrated the rookies!  Thanks to all who volunteered and — especially — to all the rookies who came out to give things a try.  We hope to see you out on the water again soon!

Congratulations to the following teams for winning their respective classes in the 2016 PRSA Rookie Regatta:

  • Albacores: Michael Heinsdorf & “Rookie Pam” (who drove at least 2 of the 4 races!)
  • Buccaneers: Jeff Neurauter & “Rookie Adam”
  • I-20s: Molly Houston (Rookie Skipper!!) sailing with Rick Loheed
  • Lightnings: Brint (Rookie Skipper!!), Kendra (Rookie Crew!!), and Will, providing tutelage to two rookies on his boat and guiding them to a win in the class with two bullets in four races!

PRSA Rookie Regatta: Rescheduled for June 26!

We have rescheduled the PRSA Rookie Regatta for June 26 after our first attempt earlier this spring was foiled by inclement weather. This is a special stand-alone one day regatta with the purpose of encouraging you all to bring new crew out to sail, to turn the helm over to your crew, or to do other creative things that might help involve new people in sailing.  The scoring system will be a bit different for this one day as there will be bonuses involved for bringing new people.  All of the relevant information, including the NOR and the Sailing Instructions, has been posted to the PRSA Rookie Regatta page: http://potomacriversailing.org/nors-sis/prsa-rookie-regatta/  Please note that in accordance with our PRSA Sustainability initiative we will not be providing hard copies of the SIs on Sunday.

Aaron will be PRO for the day. It would be helpful if you could you let us know whether you will be sailing on June 26 and, importantly, whether you are bringing more than a few “rookies” for the day.  We can accommodate extra folks on the RC boats to switch in and out of various boats if we know how many people to expect.  So please email Aaron (apb99@mac.com) once you’ve thought about your lineup for the Rookie Regatta.  Let’s get some new sailors on the water!

PRSA Rookie Regatta Rained Out

A few hardy sailors showed up this morning for the PRSA Rookie Regatta, including one true Rookie — Lizzie Ellis!  Unfortunately the conditions did not cooperate with our plans to race and the regatta was cancelled due to rain and a lack of wind.  Congratulations to Rookie Lizzie (under the umbrella) for winning the regatta by showing up and looking for a ride!  We love the enthusiasm, Lizzie, and we’ll be sure to get you on a boat next week!  We will also try to reschedule this event for after the end of our PRSA Spring Series, so stay tuned for more info.

The 2nd Annual PRSA Rookie Regatta: Sunday, May 10

Back by popular demand, we will be holding the 2nd Annual PRSA Rookie Regatta this coming Sunday!  This one-day regatta has two purposes:

  1. To encourage skippers and crews to bring new people on board, hopefully sparking an interest in racing and in sailing with PRSA; and
  2. To encourage PRSA crews to take a turn at the helm to learn about driving, build team rapport on their boats, and perhaps even spark an interest in becoming a full time owner and driver!

PRSA “Rookie Regatta” — June 8

The final Sunday of our spring season will be a special event: the first annual PRSA “Rookie Regatta.”  The one-day regatta has two purposes:

The racing on June 8 will be scored separately from the PRSA Spring Series.  The scores will not count towards a boat’s Spring Series scoring.  Instead, we will recognize all of the new crew and skippers at the regatta and provide a few racing awards for each class based on the day’s results.  For this regatta, a high-point scoring system will be used.  There will be point bonuses for bringing new sailors aboard, for having crew instead of the regular skipper drive, and more.

Please review the NOR for the “Rookie Regatta” (below) and work on your boat’s lineup for the day.  We encourage you to invite new people out to sail with you, or to turn the helm over to one of your regular crew!  The racing will be followed by the standard post-race BYO BBQ, so remember to bring a little something for the grill as well.
